Jean sans Peur Brooch
XVth century Brooch
Size 6cm
Gilded with gold 24k
Gray water beads
Interpretation of the brooch of Prince John the Fearless. Brooch that does not exist today but which is on one of his painted portraits which is an oil on oak wood well known at the Louvre Museum. Quite simply this brooch therefore represents the hops with its fruits symbol of Prince John the Fearless before the plane. We find this symbolism on the ceiling of the John the Fearless tower at the Hôtel de Bourgogne. Why Hops? because it is a plant from the North imposed by Philip the Bold to designate John the Fearless and recall the Flemish origin of the latter by his mother, Marguerite of Flanders. It is said that he would have founded the Order of Hops but we have no written traces of it. Concerning the brooch it is in yellow bronze gilded with 24k fine gold with 5 large gray freshwater pearls. The brooch in total is 6cm.
